Aida
“The Aida” cartridge by The Soundsmith is a hand selected version of our famous SMMC1 cartridge. We select it as special from our normal production run, and ship it to you mounted in a hand finished Ebony mount. Hand selected? Aren't all cartridges (of a given model) coming out of a production facility the same, or rejected if they don’t meet specifications??

Here is the "micro-manufacturing" reality:

All top end cartridges from all manufacturers are hand made. The real issue is that when you are manufacturing something so tiny, that has to perform so well, that all of them are NOT the same. If you don’t see this statement from other manufacturers, then this is a "secret" they don’t want to share, and quite understandably so.

So.....what does Soundsmith do??

We carefully hand build each and every cartridge, test them, and keep accurate records by serial number of their performance. Those that meet or exceed specifications are sold. But, there are always a few that measure much better than the other "great" ones......and we select these to be mounted in Ebony bodies, available to you as "selected" units. Do they cost more??? You bet. Much more?? No. Do they out perform many cartridges selling for two, three, four, or even five times the price?

YES.

Some ask:

"Moving Iron Cartridges better?? I thought that moving COIL types are the best??"

Our cartridges overturn the myth that moving coil cartridges are the only path towards perfection. After all, what is the accepted “advantage” of moving coil cartridges? Low effective moving mass, right? Well, we've got less. Much less. And if you understand EFFECTIVE moving mass, Less IS more. Why is that good? Because when you lower the moving system mass, it’s easier to control. If it’s easier to control, the stylus can stay in better contact with the groove walls. That’s good, because if you can’t stay in contact with the groove walls, you can’t hear what’s on the record.

Is a high gain moving coil preamp required? No. "Aida” is designed to be used with a Moving Magnet preamp. No "step-up" transformers. No finicky multi-stage ultra high gain preamp required. Less is more here, too.

THE SPEAKER
The No.5.1 loudspeaker is designed to transport you into the center of a live music experience. The concept behind this speaker is to produce music without any restrictions in terms of dynamic range, frequency spectrum or reproducibility.
Aided by the natural radiance of superbly crafted woods, this loudspeaker model enriches your living space and delivers outstanding sonic results for any type of music reproduction. The music sounds as direct and natural as when it was performed on the stage or in the studio.

DESIGN
In the No.5.1 loudspeaker, the midrange frequencies are reproduced using a 4 ” driver. The lower the mass of the driver, the faster and more accurate its response will be. The low total mass of the driver enables a seamless integration of the crucial mid frequency range with the plasma tweeter.

The bass is handled by two 8” long throw drivers. These can achieve a membrane displacement of +/- 22 cm. Despite its unobtrusive dimensions, the No.5.1 can produce a solid bottom end, well beyond the usual at home volume levels. The meticulously crafted enclosure with sandwiched layers is the basis for the loudspeakers outstanding audio performance. The sandwich design, with flatly glued high efficiency damping material alternated with sound absorption panels, ensures the energy radiated into the enclosure is dispersed very effectively, there is no opportunity for the cabinet to develop any resonant response of its own. A high quality bi-wiring terminal is provided on the back so that the tweeter can be acoustically matched to the room characteristics. With an efficiency rating of 91 dB, the No.5.1 model is also a very forgiving loudspeaker.

The Premier Quattro preamp is a two or four box preamp, totally hard wired using silver wire with specially selected components to make it one of the best sounding preamps in the world!

German Audiophiles love the KATANA!

Recently our German distributor, Hifi2die4 presented the Katana at a dealer's place. A customer sent us his comments after the demonstration:

"Nobody should lie and tell me that visual appearance and surface feel don't matter. Sure they do. The Katana is mind-blowing. It's size is huge enough to take it seriously and small enough to have freedom with the best wife on earth. The surface and lacquering is outstanding.

That is exactly what I've always been looking for: Deep -I mean DEEP, dry and punchy bass, a broad natural mid range, crystal clear and spherical high range. All of these attributes in perfect combination, none of them predominate, none of them pesky. All together introduced on a deep and broad soundstage. Especially the deep, natural bass out of only one 7" mid/bass speaker is amazing. It sounds like there was a 15"/1.000 W Subwoofer somewhere. Salute for you and your engineers.

I don't really know what I can say more. It's the best cost ratio speaker I have listened to, it's the sound I was looking for, it's a visual highlight.
